MBS ISSUES AN ORDER TO RECALL FROM THE MARKET SMOOTH MILK MAHEU PRODUCTS BY MALAWI GATBRO INTERNATIONAL DUE TO NON-COMPLIANCE ON LABELLING
The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament, cap 51:02 (revised as Act No. 14 of 2012), with a mandate to promote metrology, standardization and quality assurance of commodities and of the manufacture, production, processing or treatment thereof; and further to provide for matters incidental to, or connected with standardization. In line with the Act, the MBS has ordered a recall of defective Smooth maheu brands by Gatbro International (Malawi) from the market with immediate effect. The recall is due to noncompliance on labeling requirements as established during recent spot checks on the products that revealed that the adhesive label bearing Malawi Gatbro International manufacturers details, which obscure the original label of Zambian Gatbro International, their sister company, are easily separable from the container, thereby revealing the address of the latter, and hence, confusing as regards the true source of the product. This contravenes clauses 6.1 and 3.3 of MS 19- Labelling of prepacked foods- General Standard which state that:“Labels in prepackaged foods shall be applied in such a manner that they will not become separated from the container”, and
“Statements required to appear on the label by virtue of this standard or any other food standard shall be clear, prominent and readily legible by the consumer under normal conditions of purchase and use. Such information shall not be obscured by designs or by other written, printed or graphic matter and shall be contrasting in color to that of the background;” respectively.
In view of the above, the general public is therefore being advised not to patronize the defective Smooth maheu brands by Malawi Gatbro International (Malawi) from the market.
The MBS shall inform the general public accordingly following successful redressal of the non-conformity above.
