The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) made a donation of 250 scientific calculators to the Science Subjects Camp Project under the Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA), following a request that the ISAMA Project made to the MBS. The donation was made at an event that was held on Friday, 3rd May 2019 at Chisapi Schools in Chigumula, Blantyre.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Director General of the MBS, Mr. Symon O. Mandala, commended ISAMA for the effort made in piloting the 2018 Annual Science Subjects Camp targeting students in classes preparing for the Primary School Leaving Certificate and Malawi School Certificate examinations. He said the donation, worth MK1,000,000, was part of the MBS’s corporate social responsibility, and that he believed that the scientific calculators would be used for their intended purpose, and that they would achieve the objective of the project to improve student grades in science subjects. He further stated that the MBS is largely comprised of technical staff, most of whom are scientists, hence the organization feels obliged to promote science.
Speaking after receiving the calculators, the Project Coordinator of the Science Subjects Camp, ReverendWycliffChimwendo, commended the MBS for partnering with the ISAMA Science Subjects Camp Project, and indicated that the calculators would assist the students who will be sitting for the 2019 Primary School Leaving Certificate and Malawi School Certificate examinations. He further called upon the MBS to continue supporting the initiative as part of inculcating the science culture in students.
Earlier on, one of the recipient students, Fortunate Sinchaya, a Form Four girl student of Chisapi Private School, recited a poem in which she commended ISAMA for the initiative, and the MBS for the donation, indicating that the donation had given her “lines to stand firm and think big”.
