The State Vice President, Right Honorable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima on Friday, 10th July, 2020 visited the MBS state of the art laboratory and office complex which is under construction in Blantyre. The Vice President visited the construction site to appreciate the progress of construction of the laboratory and office complex. Ironically, it was the Vice President who laid a foundation stone for the project, at a ground breaking ceremony that was held on 25th January 2016.
Speaking after being briefed about the stages of the laboratory and office complex construction from the ground breaking stage to date, the Vice President recommended the MBS in the way it has managed the work flow of the construction. He said that the laboratory is one of the fruits of government’s reform programs under the MBS and that when completed in the next nine months, it will save and bring money into the country. “I came here in 2016 to lay a foundation stone and three years later we are seeing a building that is almost completed, this is commendable. This is a one stop shop in as far as quality assurance is concerned because when completed, the laboratory will be testing different products such as food, construction materials, minerals, petroleum products just to mention a few, he said”.
In his remarks, MBS Director General, Mr Symon O Mandala concurred with the Vice President by saying that the MBS as a standardization body is supposed to have a robust Standardization, Quality Assurance and Metrology infrastructure to promote standardization in the country and to save costs and enhance revenue. “This new MBS laboratory and office complex is a product of the government’s reform program where we need to strengthen the national quality infrastructure”, he said.
The construction of the state of the art laboratory is at 96 percent and it is being funded by the Government of Malawi.
