In December, 2023, the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) in collaboration with the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) and AMC Group Africa, conducted the “11th ARSO Continental Essay competition” for students from accredited Universities and Colleges in the country. Interested students were invited to write an essay in English under the theme: “Empowering Consumers through Standardization to Achieve their Rights to Safe Quality Goods and Services”.

The judges’ assessment at national level identified best five essays, and these were submitted to ARSO for continental assessment.

 

The essay by Madalo Banda, a final year student from the Malawi University of Science and Technology, achieved position three at continental level. Madalo was therefore was awarded a trophy, a certificate, and a monetary prize of $500 by ARSO.

The MBS facilitated her travel to Abuja, Nigeria where she received the awarded at an event that took place on the sidelines of the 30th ARSO General Assembly.
