The MBS conducted awareness training to its staff on occupational health and safety (OH&S) according to the international standard, ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use). Two training sessions were conducted on Monday, 29th June 2020, in the MBS Boardroom and on Tuesday, 30th June 2020, at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre, for top management and selected staff, respectively. The training sessions were done as part of a process to develop and implement an OH&S management system based on the said international standard.

The MBS is going towards this path in realization that an organization is responsible for the OH&S of workers and others who can be affected by its activities. This responsibility includes promoting and protecting their physical and mental health. The adoption of an OH&S management system is therefore intended to enable the MBS to provide safe and healthy workplaces, prevent work-related injury and ill health, and continually improve its OH&S performance.

Once developed, the OH&S management system will provide a framework for managing OH&S risks and opportunities. The aim and intended outcomes of the OH&S management system will be to prevent work-related injury and ill health to workers and to provide safe and healthy workplaces; consequently, it is critically important for the organization to eliminate hazards and minimize OH&S risks by taking effective preventive and protective measures.

The training sessions were facilitated by MBS personnel and the Chief Occupational Safety and Health Officer from the Ministry of Labour, Mr Goodluck Kayange. The climax of the series of the training sessions will be a detailed training to a core team of staff that will take lead in the development and implementation of the OH&S management system in the MBS.
