The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) in its quest of ensuring reliable and accurate measurements is conducting a country-wide calibration tour on measurement equipment used by the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS). The calibration service is being done at its Odala Blood Centre in Blantyre, in also Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Balaka Blood Centres.
The objective of this exercise is to ensure that all measurements are reliable, accurate and traceable to International Standards and also underscoring the purpose of MBTS of providing adequate supplies of safe blood.
This arrangement is in form of an annual service contract that MBS entered with MBTS to service and calibrate various equipment like Weighing Scales, PH Meters, Centrifuges, Incubators, Thermometers and Freezers. The MBS conducts this exercise through a joint operation of its Metrology and Testing Departments.
The industry is highly encouraged to enter into similar service contracts, like the one between MBS and MBTS. This arrangement offers several advantages among them a price freeze for the contract period, reduced downtime due to well maintained and serviced equipment, and meeting international quality standards.
